About UCEA Mid-Atlantic Region

General Description

The UCEA Mid-Atlantic Region is one of six regions.  It includes universities and colleges and educational organizations from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia and The District of Columbia.  The institutional membership of the Mid-Atlantic Region currently stands at 81 institutions and the professional membership at 369 individuals.   The financial condition of the Region is healthy.

Organization

The Mid-Atlantic Region is governed by a set of By-Laws that determines the structure and operating procedures of the organization.  These by-laws determine our officers and committee chairs, how our annual conference is run, how we can raise money and our relationship with the National.

Region Officers--Executive Committee

The executive committee provides the overall leadership for the region, coordinates the region’s activities, chiefly overseeing the regional conference and providing ideas for increasing membership, both institutional and professional and for professional development initiatives that enhance increased involvement in UCEA.

Standing Committees

    Planning:  Bea González, bgonzale@uc.syr.edu
The Planning committee meets in February. Comprised of volunteers from around the region, plus the executive committee, the Planning committee sets the theme of the fall regional conference, determines the date, makes recommendations regarding keynote speakers and concurrent sessions and in a short two days, sets the structure for the regional conference.

    Awards:  Evelin LeTarte, ELetarte@umuc.edu
The awards committee seeks and screens nominations from the regional membership for awards to be presented at the regional conference. At the regional level, there are awards that honor and acknowledge our outstanding education professionals for service and leadership, and there are awards that recognize originators of creative programs, activities and service.

    Elections:  Marvin Glockner, mglockner@notes.cc.sunysb.edu
Elections are held annually for the position of secretary, which is a one year job. However, when someone is elected as secretary, he or she is obligated to a 4 year commitment because that person will be the future regional chair, i.e. one year as secretary, one year as regional chair-elect (conference program chair), one year as regional chair, and one year as immediate post chair. A separate election is held for treasurer, currently a 3 year commitment. These two elections are usually done by mail or email, but can also be done at regional conference by paper vote. All professional members are eligible to vote for these positions. The Alternate Board Representatives to the UCEA Board of Directors is elected by the Institutional Representatives for a 2 year term. He/she then moves up as the Board of Representative for another 2 years.

    Hospitality/Welcome Wagon:  Margaret O’Donnell, odon@rci.edu
This committee welcomes new members and guests to make sure they feel at home and are included in the special events and activities planned for the conference. This committee usually recommends ice-breakers or networking opportunities throughout the conference.  This committee often involves the members of the Executive Committee and the Planning Committee.

    Membership:  Bili Mattes, bmattes@harrisburgu.net
The membership Committee has the responsibility for encouraging non-member universities and colleges to join and to encourage all member instructions to include as many colleagues as possible to join as professional members. The Mid-Atlantic Region currently has 81 institutional members and 369 professional members.

    Professional Development: Michael Zigner, mczigner@yahoo.com
The purpose and almost exclusive focus of this committee is the development and operation of the Peer Learning Circles. This committee is led by the secretary of the region.  The committee finds volunteer institutions within the region willing to host one day small seminars interested in one of the three survey areas. The cost is nominal, which is intended to encourage people otherwise unable to attend the regional conference or the national. The idea is to self- generate further discussion and, of course, to bring new colleagues into the membership

Time and Site:  Margaret O’Donnell, odon@rci.edu
This committee has the task of setting up the out year locations for the regional conferences. The goal is to have 3 years in advanced determined as to site location and host institution. The committee deals regularly with the executive committee which ultimately approves the Time and Site Committee’s recommendations.

    Bylaws: Ken Carter – kjcarter@umd.edu
The Bylaws Committee’s chief responsibility is to ensure that the region officers and committees are in compliance with the Bylaws of the region.  The committee maintains and updates copies of the region Bylaws and Operating and Procedural Guidelines.  The chair is often a member of the Executive Committee and consults and makes recommendations to the Executive Committee on changes or amendments to the Operating and Procedural Guidelines.

    Finance: Executive Committee
The Executive Committee is responsible for the financial well being of the Region, with the Treasurer providing reports at the annual Regional and National Conferences and monthly to the Executive Committee.  The Treasurer works closely with the Director of Administration at the National Office.
