Vancouver Information
Download this page as a PDF file here.
Join
us in beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia, on Canadas West
Coast! Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Coast Mountains,
Vancouvers breathtaking scenery, wealth of cultural offerings,
and temperate climate make the city a world-class destination. The
weather is the mildest in Canada with daytime temperatures averaging
70ºF in summer and 35ºF in winter. Spring comes early
in Vancouver, with flowers generally in full bloom by early March.
Enjoy Culinary Diversity
The cosmopolitan city of Vancouver encompasses a mix of many ethnic
groups. Out of this multiculturalism comes a remarkable culinary
diversity, which, when combined with BCs extensive selection
of local ingredients, is born a distinct regional flavor that is
unmistakably Vancouver. You will enjoy the freshest seafood, award
winning local wines from the emergent wine industry, and one of
the best selections of Asian dining in the world.
Explore
the Great Outdoors
Vancouvers downtown core stands proudly on an ocean-swept
peninsula surrounded by beaches, sailboats, parks and wildlife.
The downtown core is only one mile across at its widest point, making
it a perfect city for walking. Local site-seeing opportunities include
everything from whale watching tours to kayaking along the city
shores, mountain biking some of the best trails in the world, to
a gondola ride up Grouse Mountain to visit the grizzly bears.
Visit
the Museums and Galleries
Vancouver, a city with a number of universities nearby, including
Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia (UBC),
offers a lively and interesting range of educational activities.
Visit the Museum of Anthropology at UBC, a museum well-known for
its collections, research, and teaching. It is also acclaimed for
its spectacular architecture and unique setting on the cliffs of
Point Grey. The building, constructed in 1976 and designed by architect
Arthur Erickson, has soaring glass walls and overlooks mountains
and sea. The Great Hall provides an ideal setting for the collection
of First Nations artwork, which includes massive totem poles, carved
boxes, bowls, and feast dishes. Or, head to The Vancouver Museum,
Canadas largest civic museum, located in Vanier Park, just
across the Burrard Street Bridge from downtown. The Vancouver Museum
is also near the Vancouver Maritime Museum, which features a Pirates
Cove, a self-guided tour of the schooner St. Roch and many rotating
exhibits. You can take the tiny False Creek Ferries to the Maritime
Museum and from there to Granville Island. Be sure to include a
visit to the Vancouver Art Gallery, the largest art gallery in western
Canada, which presents a full range of national and international
art by contemporary artists
and historical figures.
Venture
Beyond the City
Vancouver is also the gateway for further travel in the west coast.
After the conference, spend a few extra days in the area and explore
the ski resort of Whistler, only a two-hour drive away. This resort
will be the site of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. The quaint city
of Victoria on Vancouver Island is a picturesque twohour ferry journey
to the west. Wine tours, exquisite dining and lakeside days await
in the Okanagan Valley, BCs internationally recognized wine
region. Or, hop on a cruise ship from Vancouver harbour and sail
up the BC coast to Alaskaa once in a lifetime experience that
is not to be missed. Vancouver entices visitors with its beauty
and captivates with its cosmopolitan charm. Join us in Vancouveryou
wont regret it.
