Service Project
UCEA Opportunity to Help Rebuild New Orleans
For those participating in the service project:
Dear UCEA Service Project Participant:
Thank you for your participation in this project and for helping New Orleans! Below please find logistical details.
UNO Housing
Dorm arrangements are complete. Participants will stay in Pontchartrain Hall, UNO new dorm. Check-in takes place in the North Building. Payment will be made directly to the dorm. The dorm is Building # 33. This is a link to the campus map: http://www.uno.edu/university/maps/maincamp.asp
Towels and linens will be provided.
Participants arriving by taxi should tell the driver to go to UNO, corner of Elysian Fields and Leon C. Simon. From that intersection, the map should suffice. Pontchartrain Hall--North is toward the lake.
Transportation
UNO will provide transportation to and from the work site on Monday and Tuesday. Pick-Up at the Sheraton will occur at 7:45 a.m. each morning. Please be on time. On Monday, the bus will return to the Sheraton after evening dinner. On Tuesday the bus will return to the Sheraton after the work day.
For those at the dorm, the bus will depart for the work site at 8:15 a.m. each morning.
For those who need to return to the Sheraton on Tuesday midday, UNO will provide transportation, probably via private automobiles of Metro staff.
UNO will not be able to provide midday transportation from the Sheraton for Monday/Tuesday afternoon participants. However, UNO will have midday transportation from the UNO Housing.
UNO is unable to provide transportation from the airport to any of the sites -- dorm, hotel or work site. Those who arrive at the dorm on Monday (to work on Tues) will be able to check in at any time.
Dinner
Monday night UNO will host an informal, taste-of New Orleans dinner after the work day. We've moved the dinner to 6:00 so that hotel participants can return to campus with the bus, attend the dinner, and then return to the hotel.
Breakfast for dorm participants is available at our University center, a three-minute walk from the dorm (see map).
The Service Project Site is at:
5500 Piety Drive
New Orleans, LA 70126-2308
Please wear old clothes, suitable for painting and/or landscaping. Work gloves might be a good idea, but not required.
If you have any questions/concerns during the service project days, you could contact Robert L. Dupont, University of New Orleans, at 504.905.8177.

About the Service Project
(You can listen to a 3 minute mp3 audio description of the service project.)
Plan now to participate in UCEA's service project prior to the
Annual Conference in New Orleans. This is an opportunity for
UCEA members and any accompanying family members to
devote one or two days to helping a local cause. The work site
is being arranged in cooperation with the New Orleans Recovery
School District, which is a state-managed special district
consisting of the most needy schools in the city. Volunteers will
assist schools in the rehabilitation of school facilities, including
libraries and playgrounds.
For those who might consider participating, these are the basic facts regarding the project:
- Service project participants should arrive in New Orleans either
on the Sunday or Monday prior to the Conference. Service
opportunities are being arranged for mornings and/or afternoons on Monday, March 24 and/
or Tuesday, March 25, 2008. (UCEA Preconferences will begin
on Wednesday, March 26, at the Conference hotel.)
- Participants have the option of staying on Sunday, Monday,
and Tuesday nights prior to the Conference in a residence hall
at the University of New Orleans (UNO). Those who choose
this low-cost alternative to the Conference hotel will pay approximately
$25/person per night. All rooms are in "suite"
style: private sleeping quarters, two sleeping units share
a bathroom, and either two or four sleeping units share a
common area. Linens will be provided. Internet access will be
available. Breakfast can be purchased at the University Center,
a two-minute walk from the residence hall.
- Transportation to and from the work site will be provided by UNO on both Monday and Tuesday. Participants will be responsible for transportation from the airport to UNO.
- UNO is working to provide transportation to the Conference
hotel on Tuesday and Wednesday, as needed.
- Participants will need work clothes and work gloves for the service project.
- On Monday March 24 2008, UNO will host an informal
“New Orleans style” dinner/presentation for volunteers on the UNO campus, a short walk from the residence hall.
