Blended Learning in Higher Education
D. Randy Garrison and Norman D. Vaughan Publisher: John Wiley & Sons, Incorporated, © 2007
Blended Learning in Higher
Education has been called a
groundbreaking work; it offers a
down-to-earth resource for the
practical application of blended learning in higher education, as well as a
comprehensive examination of the topic. Well-grounded in research, the
book clearly demonstrates how the blended learning approach embraces the
traditional values of face-to-face teaching, and integrates the best practices
of online learning. This approach has proven to enhance and expand the
effectiveness of teaching and learning in higher education across disciplines.
In the book, authors D. Randy Garrison and Norman D. Vaughan
present the foundational research, theoretical framework, scenarios,
principles, and practical guidelines for the redesign and transformation
of the higher education curriculum. They outline seven blended learning
redesign principles, explain the professional development issues essential
to the implementation of blended learning designs, and present six illustrative
scenarios of blended learning design. The book contains practical
guidelines to blended learning redesign, and describes techniques and
tools for engaging students.
Frits Pannekoek, President of Athabasca University, observed in a
review: "This book will make every university professor and administrator
think about how they can improve the learning experience. Not only
is it well-rooted in theory, but it is practical. The authors go through
specific disciplines and how they might use blended learning; they also
map out pathways for success. This is a must-read for those interested
in blended learning."
