Communities of Practice Awards

The criteria and judging for the Community of Practice Awards are the responsibility of UCEA's Communities of Practice. All Association members are eligible to enter the competition for these awards, as appropriate, in accord with the criteria for the particular awards.

Community of Practice Awards are organized under the following categories:

  • Programming Awards

  • Leadership and Service Awards

  • Research and Publication Awards

Complete details for each of the awards, including the nomination procedure for each award, can be found below; please ensure that your application materials are complete.

Nomination deadlines for all 2008 Community of Practice Awards are indicated below along with the criteria for each award. These nominations are not sent to UCEA's Washington D.C. Office, but to the submission address identified for each award in the description below.

Please note: Some awards require multiple submissions. Also, the panels of judges for some awards may change; please check back here for the most up-to-date listing of judges prior to submitting your materials.

Winners are notified by the Awards Chair of the appropriate CoP; the awards are presented during the UCEA Annual Conference.

I. Programming Awards

Distance Learning Community of Practice

Program of Excellence

Description: The Program of Excellence award is given annually to a credit and/or a non-credit distance-delivered instructional program that is exemplary in meeting the needs of students. The award recognizes new and innovative programs that utilize one or more forms of instruction at a distance.

Criteria and Eligibility: Eligible programs must have been developed by a UCEA institution and must have been implemented within approximately the past three years. "Program" is defined as 1) a planned series of learning experiences culminating in a degree or certificate, or 2) a package of courses and services specifically bundled together for a special target group. The program must be:

  1. Appropriate: The chosen medium is used to its best advantage; necessary student support services are in place; faculty are effectively involved in program development; the program demonstrates creativity or innovation and shows evidence of careful instructional design.

  2. Successful: The program should meet a specified need or be a significant innovation; meet its designated goals and objectives; be easily accessible; receive positive response from audiences and/or results in changes in knowledge, skills, attitudes; meet budget objectives; exemplify quality in marketing or promotion.

  3. Adaptable: To be judged adaptable, a program should be usable by other institutions either as is or with minor adaptations.

Nomination Procedure

  1. Complete the awards nomination form. (PDF file)

  2. Submit a 3-5 page narrative description of the program which addresses the criteria stated above.

  3. Submit a complete nomination packet, including nomination form, to each of the following judges. You should include samples of video (meaningful excepts, not the entire program) or other electronic media, print materials, marketing materials, etc., that demonstrate the points that you make in the narrative description of the program requested above. Materials will not be returned unless an appropriate container for mailing, including postage and address label, is provided.

Note: All nominations must be postmarked no later than January 31, 2008.

Distance Learning Course Awards
(K-12, College,Non-Credit)

Description: The Distance Learning Course Awards recognize new and innovative courses that utilize one or more forms of instruction at a distance in three categories: college, K-12, and non-credit. One course in each category (college, K-12, and non-credit) may be submitted. Courses submitted must have been completed and opened to enrollment since December 1, 2006. Revised courses may be submitted for an award if they have undergone major revision and have not been submitted for an award during the past 3 years.

Criteria and Eligibility: The following criteria guide Course Awards Committee members in assessing courses for awards and assist nominators in selecting courses to submit for judging.

  • INTRODUCTORY MATERIALS: Introduction, overview, and general objectives of the course; course mechanics, structure, special instructions, and performance standards

  • LESSONS/UNITS: Stated instructional objectives; commentary, discussion, and help, including possible audio and video components; submitted assignments and assessment

  • COMMUNICATIONS VARIANTS: Writing style; writing mechanics and editorial consistency; page organization, layout, cover, appropriateness and quality of graphics and illustrations

  • GENERAL QUALITY

Nomination Procedure

  1. Complete the awards nomination form. (PDF file)

  2. Each submission must be accompanied by a cover letter, supplying information that will assist judges in understanding the context and purpose of the course. It also might draw judges' attention to special features.

  3. Also, the judges will need access to on-line courses or be supplied with CDs to review components of these courses, if applicable. Login instruction, passwords, and information on plug-ins, media players, etc., should be provided.

  4. Printed course materials will not be returned to you; however, if you enclose media such as CDs, audiotapes, or videotapes and would like to have them back, please include a self-addressed, postage-paid envelope with your submission.

  5. Submit one (1) copy of all application materials, including the nomination form, no later than January 31, 2008 to each applicable committee judge listed below.

Workforce and Economic Development Development Community of Practice

Program Development Award

Description: The Program Development Award recognizes individuals making contributions to the development and successful implementation of workforce development / continuing education programs for employees in corporate organizations or government agencies. Special emphasis is placed on programs with innovative applications, sustainable training design features, and demonstrated evidence of producing successful / effective training results in workplace settings. While we do not discourage submission of brand new programs for consideration, we prefer programs with demonstrated track records in workplace settings that are examples of best practices in workforce development.

Nomination Procedure

  1. Complete the awards nomination form. (PDF file)

  2. Prepare a narrative that addresses:
    • program format
    • institution
    • target audience
    • attendance
    • summary or program content
    • special highlights, challenges, or needs addressed
    • demonstrated evidence of success when implemented inside a workplace environment
    • include two testimonial letters from official representatives of employer organizations that have experienced positive results in employee performance as a direct result of your workforce development/training program.

Creative Partnership Award

Description: The Creative Partnership Award recognizes creative and innovative partnerships in workforce and economic development between a university continuing education unit and its corporate and/or government partner(s). Such partnerships should have been formed to develop and implement training and/or research projects that address workforce and economic development needs within a region or an industry. Special emphasis will be given to nominated partnerships that demonstrate creativity and innovation either in the formation and operation of the partnership itself or in the partnership approach to addressing and meeting a challenging workforce and economic development need. Award is made to the lead educational institution(s) with recognition to all community partners.

Nomination Procedure

    • institution(s)/partners involved
    • statement of project needs and challenges
    • project goals
    • partnership structure (operational; administrative)
    • creative/innovative features (and how do such features contribute to the partnership's success?)

    • overall project summary/outcomes
    • demonstrated evidence of success when implemented within an industry or region
    • include two testimonial letters from official representatives of partner organizations that have experienced positive results as a direct result of your workforce and economic development initiative.

Conferences and Professional Programs Community of Practice

Exemplary Program Award

Description: Exemplary Program Awards have been given to a wide variety of conferences and professional programs — from professional education to youth activities, to large and small institutions, and for large and small programs. This award highlights and recognizes short-term continuing education programs that are exemplary.

Presentation of Award: All winners will be notified by February 8, 2008. Winners will also be invited to staff a display table or poster at the Annual Conference during the opening reception.

Criteria and Eligibility: Any university nominee or applicant for this award must be a member of UCEA. The program should span not more than two years, should have been held within the last two years, and should be completed by the date of the nomination. Criteria for exemplary programs include: program design, marketing and audience development, program management, demonstrated impact, and serving the institution's missions and/or financial goals.

Nomination Procedure

  1. The nomination form (PDF file) must be completed by a professional member of UCEA.

  2. Submit an application that addresses the following areas:
    • What makes this an exemplary program? Criteria used to evaluate nominations include: imaginative program design, unique and effective marketing, outstanding program management (including meeting financial goals) and/or quantifiable impact on audience, institution, or community. Please be sure to address these criteria in your nomination. Attach a narrative no more than one page and include up to five pages of supporting material and a brief financial summary.
    • List conference staff and/or other personnel (include name, title, and institution) who should be identified on award certificate.
    • Describe the program in 150 words or less (for use in the awards program book).
  3. Prepare three copies of the application materials and send one to each committee member. Materials will not be returned unless requested and with information included as to where to send.

Outreach and Engagement Community of Practice

Recognition of Excellence Award for Innovations in Outreach and Engagement

Description: Outreach and Engagement is the mutual exchange of intellectual resources and expertise between the university and its much broader external community of government agencies, businesses, nonprofit organizations, community groups, and individuals.

Purpose of the award: The award recognizes CoP members who have originated or enhanced successful credit and non-credit outreah and engagement programs.

Eligibility: To be eligible to receive an award, the nominated individual must be a member of the CoP - Outreach and Engagement of UCEA. Their nominated program must have completed two program cycles to be considered and has to have been offered within the last five years. Priority will be given to programs that address social, educational, or economic issues.

Evaluation Criteria

  1. Successful Outcomes (Were the objectives met) - Nominations will include stated objectives, an estimate of success, and program evaluation results. What was the impact of the initiative?

  2. Innovation - How does the program use new or creative ideas or apply ideas in new ways?

  3. Contribution to Outreach and Engagement - What significant contribution to the field did the program make? Can it be replicated in other settings and institutions?

  4. Cost Effective - How cost effective is the program and to what extent does it share the cost and revenues with its partners, if appropriate?

Nominations must be postmarked by January 25, 2008.

Distance Learning Community of Practice

Nofflet Williams Up-and-Coming Award

Description: The Nofflet Williams Up-and-Coming Leadership Award is given to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the field of distance learning, and who is a current and active member of UCEA. The contribution may be in the form of professional leadership (within the community and/or the field), research, or actual teaching/training.

Criteria and Eligibility: To be considered for this award, the candidate must have been in the field of distance learning for fifteen years or less and demonstrated service to the DL CoP through leadership activities within UCEA and a significant contribution to the profession.

Nomination Procedure

  1. The awards nomination form (PDF file) must be completed by a UCEA professional member.

  2. Prepare a written narrative detailing the reasons for nomination.

  3. Include supporting letters from two persons other than the originator of the nomination who are affiliated with institutions other than that of the nominee.

Gayle B. Childs Award

Description: The Gayle B. Childs Award is presented to an individual who has distinguished himself or herself through outstanding contributions to the field of distance learning through a combination of sustained research, writing, and leadership activities.

Criteria and Eligibility: The candidate must have demonstrated significant contributions in one or both of the following areas:

  • Research and writing that have been recognized as making a clear contribution to the field of distance learning

  • Significant leadership activities such as national and international presentations and speeches and recognition by and service to other organizations. Appropriate activities may also include those that have contributed to a better understanding of distributed learning, have resulted in cooperative efforts with other organizations, or have brought about specific improvements in distributed learning methods.

Nominations need not be restricted to persons with whom the nominator is directly associated.

  2. Prepare a written narrative detailing the reasons for nomination.

Stanley C. Robinson Distinguished Service Award

Description: The Stanley C. Robinson Distinguished Service Award recognizes outstanding long-term leaders in continuing education for commitment and contributions to the field of conferences and professional programs.

Presentation of Award: All winners will be notified by February 8, 2008.

Criteria and Eligibility

  • Nominee must be or have engaged in full-time conferences and professional programs work for a period of at least ten (10) years and is, or has been, a member of the Conferences and Professional Programs Community of Practice of UCEA.

  • Nominee must have made substantial contributions to the development and operation of conferences and professional programs, not only at his/her institution, but also through active participation and demonstrated leadership within the Conferences and Professional Programs Community of Practice of UCEA.

Nomination Procedure

  1. The awards nomination form (PDF file) must be completed by a UCEA professional member of UCEA or a UCEA member institution.

  2. Submit an application that addresses the following areas. You may include supporting material; however, the application is limited to maximum of five pages.
    • Please give a brief history indicating the nominee's activities in continuing education. Be as specific as possible. List Conferences and Professional Programs Community of Practice positions held: national, state, regional committee memberships and other leadership roles held in continuing education organizations. Include awards, publications, research, and professional or public service that recognizes this person's abilities. (You may wish to attach a current vita of the nominee.)
    • Describe why you believe the long-term work of this individual through conferences and professional programs brought credit to his/her institution and provided leadership to the profession (150 words or less).
  3. Include three letters of recommendation that address the criteria of this award. One of these letters must come from the nominee's current or past institution.

  4. Prepare five copies of the application materials and send one to each committee member. Materials will not be returned unless requested and with information included about where to send.

Faculty Service Award

Description: Faculty Service Awards have been given to recognize faculty who are not members of an extension or continuing education department for outstanding contributions to conferences and professional programs or other continuing education endeavors. This award also recognizes long-term service by a faculty member to continuing education.

Presentation of Award: All winners will be notified by February 8, 2008. Winners will also be invited to staff a display table or poster at the Annual Conference during the opening reception.

Criteria and Eligibility: Any university nominee or applicant for this award must be a faculty member who is not a member of an extension or continuing education department.

Nomination Procedure

  1. The awards nomination form (PDF file) must be completed by a professional member of UCEA.

  2. Submit a nomination that addresses the following areas:
    • What outstanding contributions has this faculty member made to the field of extension or continuing education?
    • What sort of commitment has this faculty member made over his/her tenure to the field of extension or continuing education?
    • How is this faculty member viewed by colleagues and the students he/she serves?
    • Describe the faculty nominee in 150 words or less (for use in the awards program book).
  3. Prepare five copies of the nomination materials and send one to each committee member. Materials will not be returned unless requested and with information included as to where they should be sent.

Distance Learning Community of Practice

Charles A. Wedemeyer Award and Elizabeth Powell Awards

Description: The Charles A. Wedemeyer Award and Elizabeth Powell Award recognize publications of merit that make significant contributions to research in the field of distance education. Eligible publications must have been published during 2007. Exceptions will be for publications in overseas journals dated 2006, journals with a two-year span of 2006-2007, and books copyrighted in 2007 that appear late in 2006.

Selection Criteria: The Charles A. Wedemeyer Award is given to a new book or monograph in the field of distance education.

Publications that qualify for the Elizabeth Powell Award are published articles, book chapters, or papers published in conference proceedings.

Nomination Procedure

  1. Complete the awards nomination form. (PDF file)

  2. Submit one (1) copy of all text material and the nomination form, no later than January 31, 2008 to the Publications Award chair and each of the Publications and Research committee judges listed below or arrange with the chair for text to be available to all judges.

William Rainey Harper Research Award

Description: The William Rainey Harper Research Award recognizes an individual who has completed a dissertation that contributes to the body of research on independent study and/or distance education as practiced in American universities.

Criteria and Eligibility: Preference is given to those proposals that involve interaction with the program, faculty, staff, or students of a distance education program at an institution that is a member of the University Continuing Education Association.
