2009 Workforce Development ForumConcurrent Session SpeakersJulian Alssid is Executive Director of the Workforce Strategy Center. He has previously held senior positions in workforce development at the New York City Partnership and Chamber of Commerce, LaGuardia Community College, and the Office of the Mayor of New York City. Waverly Coleman is Assistant Dean for the Division of Business and Technology and Executive Director of Corporate Solutions at the Community College of Philadelphia. He earned a Bachelor’s degree from Temple University and a Masters degree from the University of Washington. David Garvey is Director, Program on Nonprofit Leadership and Strategic Networks for the Center for Continuing Studies at the University of Connecticut. He is the founding editor of the New England Nonprofit Quarterly, now known nationally as the Nonprofit Quarterly. Michel Majdalani is Acting Director, Continuing Education Program, at Lebanese American University and Lecturer in Finance at the LAU Business School. He holds an M.B.A. in finance, and two Masters in Engineering, all from Columbia University. Gordon Medlock is Senior Human Capital Consultant with Success Factors. He holds a Ph.D. from Yale University and an M.A. from the University of Chicago, both with a major focus in psychology. Stephanie Medlock is Associate Director of Professional Studies at the University of Chicago Graham School of General Studies. She earned her B.S. in journalism from Northwestern University and her M.A. in Social Sciences from the University of Chicago. Anne E. O’Brien is Director, Professional Education at the University of Utah. She achieved a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Northeastern University and earned a Masters in Public Administration at the University of Utah. Freda Orendt is Chief of Field Operations, Sales and Use Tax Department of the California Board of Equalization. She is a recent graduate of the Leadership for Government Executive Program (LGE) and has served as a sponsor for an LGE program participant. Dennis “Skip” Parks is Dean, Continuing Education and University Outreach, and Professor-in Residence at the College of Education at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. He holds an Ed.D. from the University of Virginia; M.Ed. from Kent State University; and B.A. from Baldwin-Wallace College. Yacov Shamash is Vice President for Economic Development and Dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, State University of New York-Stony Brook. He earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from the Imperial College of Science and Technology in London, England. Vicki M. Simek is Executive Director, Professional and Community Education, at Cumberland County College, and an adjunct professor for the business division. She holds a B.S. in Information Technologies Management and an M.B.A. Jim Smith is Assistant Vice President for Economic Development and the Advanced Energy Research and Technology Center, State University of New York-Stony Brook. Timothy M. Sullivan is Dean of Business and Technology at the Community College of Philadelphia and adjunct Assistant Professor of Education in Widener University’s Higher Education doctoral program. He currently serves as Board Chair for the Collegiate Consortium for Workforce and Economic Development in Philadelphia. Carla Vincent is Senior Program Manager, Extension Programs at the College of Continuing Education at Sacramento State University. She has earned the Certified Public Planner certification from the Learning Resource Network (LERN) and holds a bachelor’s degree in business marketing and a masters degree in communications and journalism. Kristy Weidner-Gonzalez is Co-Director of the Penn State Lehigh Valley Writing Project at Penn State Lehigh Valley’s Outreach and Continuing Education Department. She has a B.A. in Political Science from Muhlenberg College and an M.A. in Political Science from Lehigh University. Nancy Winemiller Basinger is an Assistant Professor in the Masters of Public Administration Program at the University of Utah. Her research focus is the governance and management of charitable nonprofit organizations, in particular the interactions between nonprofit organizations and government institutions.
