2010 UCEA Workforce Development ForumJanuary 13-15, 2010 — Chaparral Suites Resort Scottsdale — Scottsdale, AZPreconference WorkshopRecovery and Beyond: Building a New Economy Workforce1:00 – 5:00 p.m. The next stage of the federal stimulus plan provides challenges and opportunities for college and university professional and continuing education. Federal and state government priorities will necessitate training and education programs to prepare skilled workers for the new economy. Workforce demographics and the need to fill high-demand occupations will also drive the demand for education and training. This Workshop will examine how institutions are working with local and regional Workforce Investment Boards to provide programs that meet regional workforce needs, while leveraging stimulus monies and/or other funding sources. John Twomey, Director of the New York Association of Training and Employment Professionals (NYATEP), will talk about ways that professional and continuing education organizations can work with state and local WIBs to better prepare the country’s workers. NYATEP partners with workforce boards, business organizations, education and training providers, economic development entities, organized labor, elected officials, and government agencies to improve New York’s workforce and promote economic development. Patricia Malone, Director of Corporate Training and Education and the Center for Emerging Technologies in the Office of the Vice President for Economic Development at Stony Book University, will discuss a Smart Grid consortium involving higher education, industry, government, and utility companies - with funding from a Department of Energy ARRA grant - that map out skills and certifications needed from tech levels through design, engineering, and operations for Smart Grid careers. Rita Martinez-Purson, Dean of Continuing Education and Community Services at the University of New Mexico, will talk about market research and market responsiveness in workforce training; and the programs at the University of New Mexico that leverage federal stimulus founds through the State Department of Labor and the local Workforce Investment Board. Sherry TenClay, an Executive Committee member of the local WIB and Senior Program Manager for Business and Technology Programs at the University of New Mexico, will talk about the organization of the WIB, the pockets of money available, and how to best position your institution for accessing these funds for workforce training. Alice Tom, Dean of the College of Continuing Education at California State University-Sacramento, and Jenni Helfrich, Special Assistant to the Dean, will discuss how California State University is gaining entry and deeper access to the ARRA/WIB environment. The presentation will build on recent field experiences, including a statewide event that brought together California Workforce Investment Boards and the 23 colleges in the CSU system.
