Sandy Shugart, Ph.D., Valencia Community College

Many have written on differences in generations.  But the emerging generation defies most of these analyses.  Post-modern people, those immersed in post-modern mass culture for their entire lives, hold a radically different world view, creating extraordinary challenges for every kind of institution and enterprise.  They also bring some very important gifts.  Using stories, poetry, and songs, Dr. Shugart will introduce the audience to the post-modern mind and explore implications for our work in continuing education, highlighting the importance of authentic service and engagement.

Dr. Sanford C. “Sandy” Shugart has served some ten years as the fourth president of Valencia Community College, one of the nation’s largest and most celebrated two-year colleges.  He earned his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is a frequent keynote speaker on topics such as servant leadership, leadership in the learning college, movements in mass culture, and the cultural history of higher education.  A published poet and songwriter, Dr. Shugart is also author of a soon to be released book entitled In the Crucible of Work: Essays on the Interior Lives of Leaders. He enjoys life in Orlando with Jane, his wife of thirty years, and their four children.

Understanding Strategies, Tactics and Measurement

Paul Welty, Ph.D., CEO & Chief Strategist, Synaxis

Paul Welty created Synaxis in order to bridge the gap between agencies and consultants. Strategy and execution are usually separated from one another, with the result that print and Web tools don't function as they should. "But strategy and execution belong together," Dr. Welty says. "It's important to gain a clear idea of your strategic goals before deciding what communications tools to use. It's just as important to ensure that the tools you develop really do express your specific goals." Welty designed Synaxis' unique collaborative methodology to ensure that strategies are formulated and executed successfully.

Dr. Welty has years of experience managing and developing strategic solutions, such as intranets, extranets, annual reports, brochures, advertisements, and ecommerce sites. He uses his extensive knowledge of print design, Web technology, and their relationship with human interaction to craft customized solutions for his clients, who have included Holiday Inn, Marriott ExecuStay, Cingular Wireless, Georgia-Pacific, and ING Americas. Welty holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Emory University.

For more information on Paul and his company, visit the Synaxis website.
